Carcassonne—Saissac Castle and Village Views

Today is the last day we'll have a car and this time we drove northwest to Saissac Castle. Within five minutes we're out of Carcassonne and enjoying rolling hills, vineyards, villages with medieval churches and tiny streets for walking and (gulp) driving, and vistas of the snow-capped Pyrenees.

I included pictures of Saissac Castle, the last we'll visit in this region, but more importantly, we fell in love with Montolieu where we had lunch. This village is famous for being the village of books. It has many libraries (i.e. bookstore), an English teacher's haven. Spent the rest of the day driving the countryside with no particular destination in mind. Lovely!

View from the bridge.

One of Montolieu's squares. Obviously this is where we had lunch.

In France everyone gets dessert.

Montolieu main street.

Saissac Castle, 950-1789. The Saissac ruins make La Cite
seem fake; that's how well Carcassonne's castle has been restored.

Saissac, like the castle, built on the hillside looking southwest
to the Pyrenees mountain range. These folks have million
dollar views.

View from Saissac Castle to valley below and Pyrenees beyond.

Even the laundry has blow away views.

We couldn't get enough.

Medieval gate for town.
Even toilets are classy.

Note stone under stucco exterior. Cool idea for owner to
expose original construction.
