Carcassonne—Drive to Caunes-Minervois, and Lastours

Caunes-Minervois marble Zeus.

We picked up our car this morning and headed out to Caunes-Minervois, famous for its high quality red and white-veined marble used in both Versailles and the Opera House in Paris. The 8th century Romanesque Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul is spectacular. The town's Medieval streets and Renaissance houses are charming and completely impractical today even though the homes are wired, plumbed, and occupied.

Republic square adjacent to Abbey. Notice size of Plane trees
planted in 1792. Marie is near fountain.
Ancient plane trees planted 1792. These line Canal
du Midi and many promenades in Carcassonne.

20th century village wash house. Ya, you read
that right. The public wash house is where linens
were laundered and rumors were spread.

Four castles at Lastours built by the Cabaret family circa 1060's.
Family and castles survived the Cathar crusades, but paid the
price in 1227 for siding with them, because the Royal Army
destroyed the village and castles after the crusades. Castles
were rebuilt afterward.
