Ireland—April 7-May 4
In 1996 we walked the UK's Lake District for a month and then took a break in northern Wales. After catching our breath, we noticed Holyhead had a ferry crossing to Dublin. We hadn't planned on going, but when you're so close why not?Of course, we hadn't considered the timing. It was July 5th and the USS JFK (CV-67) aircraft carrier was pulling out after spending three days in Dublin. Yep, 5000 sailors descended on the city and tried, unsuccessfully, to drink it dry, but I didn't have any trouble finding a Guinness. The beer in Ireland flows eternally! It's probably a rule.
Anyway, we had 3 lovely days in Dublin and said we'd return to explore the rest of the country. So, 28 years later we're finally getting around to it.
This is a rail journey that covers the country. Our plan is to stay in a central location and then take excursions from our hubs—Dublin, Cork, Killarney, Galway, and Belfast; finishing our tour with a few more days in Dublin. We're looking forward to this rail trip across Ireland's lush countryside.
Dublin—April 8
We finally made it to our hotel at 6:30PM after 26 hours of travel from Sea/Tac to Amsterdam and then Dublin. It was a long day but uneventful, just the right kind of travel.
Amsterdam' Terminal E is cavernous. |
Do we look like we've been awake 22 hours? |
These are all departures. Clearly, Amsterdam is a major hub for Europe. |
We were greeted by rain, rush hour traffic, and Kevin Beatty, our gregarious taxi driver. |
Wren Urben Nest entrance. |
The Bankers Bar entrance. Looked pretty cozy on this rainy early evening. |
Dame Lane is lined with pubs and clubs. The Bankers bar is the red one leading into the lane. |
This pub is at the end of Dame Lane and looked inviting, but we'd been up 28 hours and thought bed sounded better than a beer. |
WooHoo! You've officially started on your "redo". Have lots of fun and drink lots of Guiness!
