April 14th
We slept in until 8:30AM today because we didn't have anything planned other than wandering the city and finding where we might watch the finals of The Masters. We checked into four pubs asking about the tournament but couldn't get a commitment. Guess we'll just have to read about the results in the paper.
The Gabriel House, our hotel, sits on the hill overlooking the train station. |
In the lobby of our hotel, JFK is seen driving up Summer Hill Rd. when this was a private home. |
Wandering the lanes on Merchant's Quay, the downtown island of Cork. |
The beauty of getting lost down one of the lanes is discovering treats like these. |
Marie had a crispy caramel and I had a caramel crunch, both to die for. |
Just a cool looking building in town. |
This balcony down a lane was a nice surprise. |
St. Patrick's Street and square. This shot can't capture the vitality of this area of Cork City. The English Market and all the traditional pubs branch out from here. |
Murals decorate the city, part of the EU's designation of Cork City as a Capital of Culture in 2005. |
This heron along the River Lee wasn't perturbed by my approach. |
A pub that might have The Masters on TV at the same time a blues band is scheduled to play. |
We were told the Welcome Inn might also have The Masters, but if not, is a traditional pub and pours a proper Beamish. And it does. |
We watched this ship pull in last night. It's moored on the south channel of the River Lee behind the train station in line of sight from our room. |
At 6:30PM we headed out for a bite. |
We walked up the road to the The Wine Bar, a neighborhood tapas restaurant. |
We shared the special—a yummy chicken and pasta dish. |
We also ordered a mushroom and arugula bruschetta with balsamic vinegar. It's not easy being us. |
*Pretty easy day of 5.3 miles today.
