Lauterbrunnen—May 14-16, 2023

Goodbye Zurich

We caught a train to Lauterbrunnen today (May 14th). We're stopping off here, because it's probably the most beautiful mountain valley in the world.

Train ticket from Zurich to Lauterbrun-
nen with only one change at Interlaken
East, a perfect 3 hour trip.

We arrived at Lauterbrunnen at 3PM, right on schedule, and crossed the road and walked up a hill directly across from the train station to Hotel Silberhorn. We checked in and walked to the 4th floor to our room and then headed out for a walk.

The weather was rainy with little change during our visit, but we didn't care. We brought raincoats and umbrellas, knowing the weather would be unpredictable.

So, for the rest of this entry, I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves. I'll provide a few captions, but mostly, I want you to enjoy the views we did on our first and only full day here.

Our room is modern and ultra comfy. The bed is a king!

We took a short walk in the rain after
checking into our room. Still pretty.

Spill way that runs under the main
road. The water comes from one
of the 67 waterfalls in the valley.

Can you tell we're in a German part
of Switzerland?

The creamy tomato soups certainly
hit the spot after walking in the rain.

It was supposed to rain most of today, but we managed an hour long walk along the valley floor before it started. Only took us 48 minutes to get back to our hotel and dry out. Luckily, within an hour the clouds lifted and we had sun breaks so we took a commuter train up to Wengen where the views back down to Lauterbrunnen are spectacular.

Jerry, of Tom and Jerry, suggests this is the place
for fondue.

Just about any time here is coffee time.

Used my zoom lens to spy this flag at a cave
entrance across the valley.

These signs are posted in Lauterbrunnen to keep
tourists from driving up private driveways. This
one is on the road that leads to the end of the valley.

The ultimate retirement home.

And this farm has a cheese vending machine!

This farm is selling cheese at their roadside. Note
that credit cards are accepted.

Public barbecue with picnic tables and a toilet.

May 16, 2023—Leaving for Grenoble

This morning we catch three trains to eventually arrive (7 hours later) in Grenoble. But first, thought I'd show the breakfast Hotel Silberhorn includes. Pretty amazing.
Bread, croissants, and assorted rolls.

Jams and cereal.
The ultimate coffee machine.

Dining room from entrance.

Juice, fruit, and cheese selection.
Selection of sliced meats and yogurt.

Sausage, eggs, and bacon
