Porto—a walk along the Atlantic

Sept. 22: Today we caught the 502 bus to Matosinhos, a city on the Atlantic and just three miles from Opah, our home in Porto. It's a separate city of about 175,000,  but I have no idea where the boundary was, because it was a straight ride out to the beach.

We got off one stop before the end of the line and crossed the street to the promenade that traces the Atlantic coast all the way back into Porto's historic district on the Douro River. We walked about 4 miles past the Douro breakwater and then caught a bus for the last mile or so to the historic district on the riverfront and then walked up and up and up, purchasing a Magnum ice cream bar at the top to help fortify us for the last 1.5 mile walk home.

We could only walk five or so miles today, because yesterday we put about 7 miles on our feet.
On the bus to the beach.

The good life.

Not a care in the world for these two guys.
Winter is coming; time to pull up the walkway before the storms hit.

I liked the mix of architecture. The modern
apartment is right on the two lane street that
follows the coastline. Personally, I prefer the
little place set back.

A little private cove at the mouth of the Douro River. The
breakwater is on the right and the seawall on the left creates
this protected beach.

Fishing for Sargo at the mouth of the Douro.

It's not much, but he caught a 7" (22 centimeter) perch.

Fisherman's cove near mouth of Douro River.

Fisherman's cove.

Pile of nets at fisherman's cove.

And this little cutie was just checking out the action along
the riverfront at fisherman's cove.

Here's a sample of the bus ride back to the historic district along the Douro River.

And here's another little video taken while walking along the Atlantic.
